In the summer when it's too hot to cook, I gravitate towards cold or no-cook options for my meals and snacks. Smoothies are a great option when you want something cool and refreshing yet healthy to eat.
Smoothies are also the ultimate fast food. Basically throw some frozen fruit, a protein source, and some liquid in a blender, and you have yourself a healthy smoothie in minutes.
Even though they are simple, I realize though that sometimes it is helpful to have some direction as far as flavor combinations and ratios.
Today I'm sharing with you one of my daughter's favorites, a delicious and creamy mango banana smoothie.
Simple Ingredients
Frozen mango chunks: 1 cup is all that is needed. The mango chunks must be frozen! Frozen fruits help thicken the smoothie as well as keep it super cold without using ice cubes. You could freeze fresh mango, but I prefer to use a bag of pre-peeled and sliced mango pieces to save time. Aldi has a great price on these.
Banana: 1 medium sized banana is needed for the recipe. No need to freeze ahead of time. You can slice it if you need extra room in your blender or leave it whole. Ripe bananas sweeten the drink and give it a nice creamy texture. No added sugar or sweeteners will be needed if your banana is ripe.
Greek yogurt: I prefer a plain thick Greek yogurt for the extra protein and creaminess that it provides. I like to pair my carbs with plenty of protein to balance blood sugar and keep me full until my next meal.
How to make a mango banana smoothie
Making a smoothie is so incredibly simple you don't even need instructions, but here is the step by step.
- Place your frozen mango, banana, and Greek yogurt in a blender.
- Blend on high speed until all ingredients are blended smooth.
- If smoothie seems too thick, add a bit of water, milk, or almond milk.
- If smoothie is too thin, add a little extra frozen mango to thicken.
- Pour into your glass or mason jar and enjoy!
Equipment needed
The only special equipment needed for this recipe is a blender.
HIGH SPEED BLENDER: A high speed blender is essential for achieving that super smooth consistency that you get at smoothie restaurant chains.
For the best of the best, I always recommend the Vitamix if it is in your budget. It truly is a superior product and a great investment if you make a lot of smoothies or blended sauces and soups.
For a more budget option, the Ninja is good. I prefer to use the single serving cup because it does a much better job blending than the larger main blender.
If you are finding that your smoothies just aren't turning out well, it's probably your blender. You may need an upgrade.
Extra nutritional add ins
This smoothie is already full of healthy ingredients containing vitamin C, potassium, protein, and probiotics. If you want to bump up the nutrition even more without changing the flavor much, consider adding any of the following:
- collagen peptides
- chia seeds
- milled flax
- spinach (This will change the color of your smoothie, but doesn't really change the flavor.)
Give this easy smoothie recipe a try! It's the perfect way to start your day with a healthy breakfast.
