An easy pizza sauce recipe that can be ready in minutes. Just tomato paste, water, and spices. Such a simple recipe yet so tasty. You never knew making your own pizza sauce could be so easy.
For years on Friday night we would have homemade pizza night. We experimented with a variety of pizza doughs and pizza sauces over the years, from complicated to simple.
I landed on a simple pizza sauce that I created made with tomato paste. It was the right mix of easy and frugal. Give it a try for your next pizza night!
Easy homemade pizza sauce
Pizza sauce is one of those things you should never buy from the grocery store. It is way too easy and cheap to make at home than to buy a store-bought pizza sauce. It's on my list of foods to make from scratch for sure!
Some recipes for pizza sauce are complicated and require cooking. This is not that type of recipe. My homemade pizza sauce uses simple pantry staples, no oil, and does not require any cooking. Just mix together a tin of tomato paste, water, and spices and you have yourself a homemade pizza sauce.
It can be made in just a couple of minutes, which makes it perfect for whipping up quick tortilla pizzas or English muffin pizzas as a cheap lunch idea.
Can you use tomato paste as a substitute for pizza sauce?
Yes! Tomato paste can be mixed with Italian seasoning spices and thinned with water to make a delicious homemade pizza sauce.
In fact, tomato paste produces a thick sauce that helps prevent a soggy pizza that can result from using thinner and more watery tomato products like tomato puree or whole tomatoes.
We certainly don't want a soggy bottom pizza!
Also using tomato paste is one of the budget-friendly ways to make pizza sauce since tomato paste is so cheap!
Simple Ingredients
As always I try to keep the ingredient list simple and attainable for everyone.
- tomato paste: 6oz can that can be found at any store
- water
- salt
- garlic powder
- oregano
- thyme
- fennel seed
Note: Italian seasoning can be substituted for the oregano, thyme, and fennel seed. Simply use 1 tsp of dried Italian seasoning instead of the oregano, thyme, and fennel seed.
Basic steps
The steps could not be easier. No fancy equipment required. No cooking involved.
- Place entire 6 oz can of tomato paste into a small bowl.
- Add salt, garlic powder, thyme, fennel seeds, and oregano.
- Gradually pour in water and mix with a spoon until the sauce is well incorporated and smooth.
- Store for later or use immediately to top your favorite pizza dough.
- Yields 1 cup of sauce, which is enough sauce for 2 pizzas.
Storing homemade pizza sauce
Leftover pizza sauce can be stored in the fridge or freezer.
Store in an airtight container or glass jar and place in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Pizza sauce freezes very well, too so it's a great thing to keep on hand for convenience.
Store in a freezer-safe container or freezer jar. Alternatively you could also freeze in an ice cube tray or muffin tin. Then when frozen, pop out and keep in a freezer bag. Defrost for individual servings of pizza sauce when the pizza craving strikes.

Diinaus
Brilliant idea . I used to stock passata and tomato paste in my pantry. I think from now on I will just stock paste . One less item to have on the master grocery list.
